In this podcast, Kelly Tappenden, PhD, RN, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (JPEN) interviews Jay Mirtallo, MS, RPh, BCNSP, FASHP, President of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (A.S.P.E.N.), on the current drug shortage crisis and its implications for nutrition support therapies. This topic is also addressed in Dr. Mirtallo's invited commentary in the July 2011 issue of JPEN. In his article, Dr. Mirtallo highlights the safety risks associated with the lack of supplies or missing ingredients in parenteral nutrition (PN) formulations; he also describes how clinicians can address such challenges by working together and following A.S.P.E.N. product shortage recommendations as a guide to safe PN practices.
